Other fun things in my aquariums:
Lately I've been expanding my experience and have started caring for several other species of freshwater fish and invertebrates. Some of the fun things I've added to my aquariums include:
Weather Loach
Otocinclus sp.
Bristlenose Pleco
Long-finned Bristlenose Pleco
Zebra Pleco (L46)
Mollies
Harlequin Rasboras
Bosemani Rainbowfish
Rummynose Tetras
Procambus alleni crayfish "Clayton
Red Cherry Shrimp
Orange-eyed Blue Tiger Shrimp
Orange Rabbit Snails
Koi and other pond fish
dwarf orange crayfish (cpo)
These have proven to be challenging and fun - mollies are terribly easy to breed, but having babies is always exciting, no matter how easy they are to get!
My P. alleni "Clayton" has all kinds of character and has taken one walkabout already which he was lucky to survive when I found him walking across the floor at 3am after being out of his tank for 24 hours.
The cherry shrimp have proven invaluable in increasing the growth rate of my betta spawns since I started adding berried females to the fry tanks as a clean up crew and to provide natural live food for the fry.
Clayton's tank is a 55 gallon planted tank and he gets to pretend to hunt the schooling fish in his tank - pretty little Harlequin rasboras and Rummynose tetras and young Bosemani Rainbowfish. This is one of the most active and fun tanks to watch after a long day of work.
My L46 Zebra Plecos are still young, and I have hopes that someday soon they'll grow up to give me a spawn. These guys are very rare (wild caught are banned from exportation) They are beautiful little creatures and really striking in the aquarium.
The long-finned BNP are gorgeous creatures - they almost rival the HM betta with thier long flowing finnage. Since they do not grow large (only about 3-4") they make a good algae eater solution for the average fish tank. Perhaps soon I will have little BNP in my tanks
Wally the weather loach is another interesting creature. Whenever a storm is approaching Wally starts to get very active. Also he's great fun to watch at feeding time - especially when he starts going after white worms.
I built myself a large pond this summer and I've been having a great time adding Koi and Goldfish to the water as well as landscaping and gardening around it. On warm days it's relaxing to head out to my "patio" by the pond and enjoy both flowers and fish. What can be better?
My most recent additions are the blue tiger shrimp and the rabbit snails. Both are neat little creatures. I've never been able to keep snails alive in my tanks (other than those nasty nuisance snails!) but the rabbit snails seem to like being in my shrimp tank so far.
